Banner Exchange – Spottt

Spottt works similar to Entrecard.  All you have to do is to apply for an account, upload your own 125×125 ad, get approved and your ad would show on the other sites.

The approval process takes 1 business day and during this day, the Spottt widget on your site would show the default Spottt ads.  You would still earn credits.

Everything is automated.  You don’t have to find sites to place your banner.  Once you gained credits, your ads would show on other sites which would spend your credit.  To have your ad shown on other sites more frequently, you would need to have high traffic on your site.  The more your widget is shown, the more your ad would be shown.

Make Your Site Well-Known – Qassia

It is great that you have a website full of information – in face the website helps you to show others how intelligent you are. However, it doesn’t help if nobody knows about your site.

Qassia is another site that you can submit articles that links back to your site. It is quite similar to Squidoo, but it is easier to use.

All you have to do is to open an account and get started. You do not need to place a batch on your site, although I highly recommend you do. By placing a batch you will be able to enter the ’sticker mania promo’. When your site is crawled by Qassia you would gain credit.

To ’show off your talent’ you can write articles, named ‘intel’, and publish them on the Qassia website.  By writing articles you can start building links to your website – note the Qassia website has a pagerank of 5 at the time of writing.

You can also make money – you can enter your own Adsense ID and the ads shown on your Intel would be under your adsense account.

Qassia is free to join. Join NOW!

E-commerce site

“I would like to have an e-commerce site for my business, but my budget is very limited.  What should I focus on?”

I have heard a lot of comments like the above.  Basically, if the budget is limited, I would recommend the client to use open source carts like Zen Cart or OS Commerce to start the project.  Use a good web host with these ready to install.  Get a university student to help you customize it and your site would be ready to go in a week.

However, I would also focus on 2 more things.  These are crucial to your site’s success.

1. Usability – how easy is it to locate a product and make a purchase?  Is the site hard to use?
2. Conversions – I must emphasize this.  The site is built to attract people to buy.  Keep the conversion path short and precise.  Remember – 1 extra step means giving the user the chance of ’should I really buy this?’.

After all, it is about user experience.  Make sure your site is easy to use, easy to checkout, and you are on your way to success.

SEO for Flash

For a long time, SEO specialists would recommend:

1. Do not include important information in flash format only
2. When flash is present, make sure the important information is repeated in the form of simple text within that page

Now it has changed. Google Webmaster Blog has recently announced a technology break-through in Flash SEO.

In a nutshell:

  • Google can now read SWF files
  • Google can now read the textual information within the flash file
  • However FLV files, like the ones used in YouTube, would not be indexed
  • If the flash is executed by JavaScript, it is likely that it would not be indexed
  • If the flash file attaches some external files, no matter what it is, it won’t be indexed
  • Flash content written in bidirectional languages would not be indexed

Google ’sees’ the flash just like a human, by ‘clicking buttons’, ‘entering input’ etc, and remembers all the textual contents of the flash file. Google’s algorithm regarding the flash file would be more effective by utilizing Adobe’s new Searchable SWF library.

To get your flash file indexed, you do not need to do anything.
