Google TV Ads

June 6th, 2008 at 08:00am Under Search Engine Advertising

Google has advanced one more step in advertising.  Now you can advertise on TV through Google!

You can view an introduction video on here.  It is very easy to set this up.  Through you usual Adwords campaign management interface, you can create a new TV ad campaign, choose the channels and time that you want your video to show.

If you are not sure which channel to advertise on, you can ask for suggestions by inputting your target audience.  You can then choose the recommended time and channel and add it to your schedule.

You can also choose the program that you want to advertise on.  If you are not sure about any recommended programs, there is a ‘more’ link that shows you what the program is about.

If you need help shooting the video, Google would also give you recommendations as well.

The report shows when the ad was shown, impressions gained and how much you spent.

Search Network Vs Content Network

May 29th, 2008 at 03:21pm Under Search Engine Advertising

If you are experienced / semi-experienced in Adwords, then you would know the difference between these 2 networks.  However, I just read from some news that there is a guy suing Google for making his ads displaying on websites that he doesn’t like.  He thought not putting in the bid for content ads would automatically opt him out of the content network.

I won’t be surprised if Google wins the case.

In brief:

  • Advertising in the search network means allowing the ads to show as the sponsored links of the search result pages.  This supports geo-targeting ie. you can choose what country / region to display your ad, and is based on a standard IP table.  Only contextual ads are allowed.
  • Advertising in the content network means allowing the ads to show on Google’s content network, which is a pool of Google’s partnering sites.  You can go through the list of websites and only allow the ads to be shown on the sites that you choose, or exclude the sites that you don’t like etc.  You can use contextual ads, banner ads (flash, animated gif or static image), video ads etc.

When you setup an Adwords account, it is always recommended to setup 2 campaigns, one for content network and one for search network.  This way you can control the budget spend better as well.

Landing Page Loading Time Vs Quality Score

May 6th, 2008 at 09:09am Under Search Engine Advertising

Google has announced that they have now put one more factor into consideration when measuring quality score. In about 1 or 2 months, the loading time of the landing page would affect quality score.Reliable web hosting starting at $2.99 per month!

Google is doing this because they want to ensure the user experience would always been ensured. Moreover, users are more likely to leave your site if the landing page takes ages to load.

For people who don’t know, quality score is employed on Adwords and the higher the quality score, the more in favour of your bidding keyword. It is possible to have a keyword with a low CPC and high QS to rank higher than a keyword with high CPC and low QS.

You can read more about this here.

For the next month, I would suggest doing the following:

1. Review your keywords in the Adwords account
2. Review your landing pages to ensure they load fast. Optimized pages are usually in more favour. Try to use CSS/DIV instead of tables to lay your page.
3. Review your keywords again

Google Adsense

September 14th, 2007 at 12:41pm Under Search Engine Advertising

It is quite a usual practice that many website contains advertisement.  The banner ad model is basically gone - people ignore them and simply won’t click on them.

The (not so new) way of advertising on website is Google Adsense.  You can customize the look and feel of the ads to fit into your webpages.

And by putting ads onto your webpages, and when someone clicks on them, you get paid by Google.  The payout is US$100. If your website / blog is popular, it is just not hard to make.

3 more things you can do rather than text ads:

  • Image ads
  • Button asking people to join Adsense - and you get commission
  • Button asking people to download firefox - and you get paid up to US$2 if that person downloads the whole package offered by Google (including Google earth, Adobe reader etc.)

It is very important not to violate Google’s rules - including not to click the ads by yourself and not to tell others to click on the ads.

Landing Page

July 17th, 2007 at 03:34pm Under Search Engine Advertising

A landing page is commonly employed by search engine advertisers to maximize conversion.

The most important task of a landing page is to keep the internet user on the page and convert it to a sales / lead.

There are a few things to note when designing your own landing page:

1. To-the-Point
Make sure the best features are clearly presented to the internet user.  Bullet point is proven to be very effective.

2. Show a Path
Rather than a lot of navigation options, a landing page should contain a conversion path.  I usually would only put an enquiry form above the fold.  It is better to have minimal links on the website.  This would confuse people.

3.  Testimonies
Testimonies are good tools as people tend to trust words from the others.  Testimonies from large corporate clients would be a bonus.   Don’t make it too long.
