Mozilla Prism

A summary of the Mozilla Prism is “a web browser that acts like desktop application”.  Mozilla Prism was formerly known as Webrunner.

I personally like using desktop application more than web, as the interface only contains the stuff that I need when I am on it.  I don’t need a back and forward button when writing my programmes.  I don’t need an address bar either.

Same for some web applications eg. Gmail, Calender etc.  You don’t need those as they are Ajax based.

Mozilla Prism has stripped out all these.  Hence, when running Ajax web applications, it does look like a desktop application.  Prism is an application that lets users split web applications out of their browser and run them directly on their desktop.

And hence, you can create individual icons for your application, to be placed on your desktop.

When they are run, these applications would run in their own window.

However, Mozilla Prism cannot be run offline.  As expected.

You can find more information about the Mozilla Prism here: http://labs.mozilla.com/2007/10/prism/

No cash accepted for iPhone

A recent news – to purchase an iPhone, you must use a bankcard or visa card with your name on it.  Want to buy it with cash?  Well, you can’t.

This is the latest policy of Apple, trying to prevent people from buying the phone and unlock & resell them.

For the ones not familiar with this: buying an iPhone in the US would tie you to the AT&T network.  You cannot use other carriers’ service with iPhone.

There are heaps of websites teaching people how to unlock a phone, both by altering the hardware (with a bit of skills & luck with soldering iron)  or cracking the software.

These unlocked phones are estimated to cost Apple eventually – because people won’t be tied to the AT&T network anymore, which would pay Apple for each sign up, someone believes.

HTML 5 – what now?

New standard of the World Wide Web has increased again.  Not many people are familiar with HTML 4 yet, and now HTML 5 is released.

The main difference of HTML 5 from version 4 is as below:

  • New parsing rules
  • New elements – section, video, progress
  • New Input attributes – time, email, url
  • New attributes – ping, charset, async
  • Global attributes (that can be applied for every element) – id, tabindex, repeat
  • Elements no longer compatible with HTML 4 – a, hr, strong (what?  no HR?)
  • Elements dropped – center, frame, strike (who use frame anyway)

The HTML 5 project is powered by WHATWG started 2004 (really) and was adopted by W3C in 2007 as the new standard of the markup language.  The standard was originally named Web Applications 1.0.

Fellow web designers – some more fun stuff to play with :)
