The success of Twitter is because instead of a long blog post, you can get an update of a person of interest within 140 characters.  This is a good way to use Twitter as you get all updates of all your friends within a single webpage.

If you are behind a corporate firewall, you might not be able to use Twitter.  In this case, Present.ly comes into the scene.

Present.ly, just similar to Twitter, is also a micro-update communications tool.  It can be installed within your own network, so that only people inside your company can have access to it.  Employees would have the ability to instantly communicate their current status online.

Ratio?  One to many.

Applications written and shown on the Yahoo site allows users to check information without leaving the site. Thus keeping the users on the Yahoo site for longer.

Yahoo would still control who can write the applications to avoid security issues. Therefore, it is not really a ‘open for all’ news.

But this would at least make users of Yahoo feel safe, as they don’t have to worry about personal data being in jeopardy.

Google claims it has better stability and won’t slow your computer down, as it frees up memory when a tab is closed. It also uses multi-threading technology so everything runs in parallel. If anything goes wrong, you only lost one tab. Not the whole browser.

What is being considered a Knol? A knol is an authoritative article about a specific topic.

Knols were written by authoritative people who actually knows about the topics. Nowadays, Knol is open for everyone.

Every Knol would have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. The content represents their knowledge and opinion.

Google is trying to introduce “moderated collaboration”. Readers can suggest or comment on the articles, and the authors would have control over what they have published.

Bonus: Google has an agreement with the New Yorker magazine which allows any author to add one cartoon per knol from the New Yorker’s extensive cartoon repository.

What does it do?  You can use Jiffy to:

• measure individual pieces of page rendering (script load, AJAX execution, page load, etc.) on every client
• report those measurements and other metadata to a web server
• aggregate web server logs into a database
• generate reports

How does it work?

According to Google Code, “you can use Jiffy end-to-end by

• including Jiffy.js in your pages and instrumenting them with the appropriate mark and measure calls
• Making the configuration changes needed to your proxy
• Adding the ingestor as a cron job on your web servers, with appropriate connection strings
• Setting up the data model
• Editing the reporting configuration and deploying the reporting tools

More simply, you can combine Jiffy and the Firebug add-in to view Mark & Measure results for a single developer client.“

Exciting isn’t it? For the people that hates Windows Vista, the good news is that Windows 7 is scheduled to launch in late 2009.

As you can see from the video, you can drag, enlarge, minimize the images with 2 fingers. Nice isn’t it.

But you do need a screen that support touch-screen.

Apart from this new feature, I do hope that it is a stable version of Windows. This is more important to me.

And guess what, it is free!

The Google App Engine applications are easy to build and maintain.  You do not need to maintain your own server or hosting, as Google generously provides 500MB space for free.  All you have to do is to upload the application, and it would be done.  You can use a free domain name from appspot.com, or your own domain.   You can also choose to share the finished application with the world or limit it to just yourself.

Did I mention free?  Same as most of the other Google applications, having an account is free.  The bandwidth should allow you do serve about 5 million page views a month, according to Google.

At this stage only free accounts are available.  However, in the near future, you would probably be able to purchase more disk space.

Other features include (but not limited to):

• Sandbox – The sandbox isolates your application in its own secure, reliable environment that is independent of the hardware, operating system and physical location of the web server.
• Python Runtime Environment – The App Engine only supports Python at the moment.  It is running Python 2.5.2.
• Datastore – App Engine provides a powerful distributed data storage service that features a query engine and transactions. Just as the distributed web server grows with your traffic, the distributed datastore grows with your data.
• Google Accounts – You can of course associate your application with your Google account.
• URL & Fetch Service – Applications can access resources on the Internet, such as web services or other data, using App Engine’s URL fetch service.
