You might not be using it, but you cannot deny that RSS has slowly becoming a popular choice when people subscribes to have updated information delivered.

If you have an RSS feed on your blog, why not submit them to the RSS directories?

SEO for Flash

For a long time, SEO specialists would recommend:

1. Do not include important information in flash format only
2. When flash is present, make sure the important information is repeated in the form of simple text within that page

Now it has changed. Google Webmaster Blog has recently announced a technology break-through in Flash SEO.

In a nutshell:

  • Google can now read SWF files
  • Google can now read the textual information within the flash file
  • However FLV files, like the ones used in YouTube, would not be indexed
  • If the flash is executed by JavaScript, it is likely that it would not be indexed
  • If the flash file attaches some external files, no matter what it is, it won’t be indexed
  • Flash content written in bidirectional languages would not be indexed

Google ’sees’ the flash just like a human, by ‘clicking buttons’, ‘entering input’ etc, and remembers all the textual contents of the flash file. Google’s algorithm regarding the flash file would be more effective by utilizing Adobe’s new Searchable SWF library.

To get your flash file indexed, you do not need to do anything.

How did Google look?

The 2001 version of the well-known search engine is introduced by the time machine Google for celebration of its 10th birthday.

Google in 2001

“We wanted to offer users a chance to search an older index as a way of looking back at web history, and the January 2001 Google index is the earliest we could generate,” said a spokesman from Google.

The Google logo back then was like a toy shop. Anyway, it is quite fun to play around with it.

At that time, Best Web Ezy was not online. And of course, a lot of significant brands as well.

And there is no Adwords ads on the search result pages!

YouTube Launches Moron Detector

I kind of like the sense of humour of Google.

To prevent people leaving un-useful (aka crab) comment on YouTube videos, the team developed a new feature for YouTube.

Now when you leave a comment on a video, you can choose to have it read to you.  Apparently you would (probably) found that you are a moron when you listen to your own message.

The aim of having this feature is to improve the quality of discussion on this freewheeling video sharing site.

Fun with WordPress MU

I was playing around with several web applications recently, due to interest + project requirement. One of the application that I installed was WordPress MU.

It is surely a sweet program. If you do everything right, it really only takes 2 minutes.

But I spent a few hours. This is because:

1. I am trying out a new hosting account. I host this website in iPowerWeb. The ‘localhost’ should be changed to ‘username.ipowermysql.com’.

(2. My friend Rendy saved my time with finding out that iPowerWeb have CGI disabled by default. Hence I enabled it before I did anything. Thanks Rendy. If I have read his blog before I install, I would have saved time on point 1 above, too.)

3. That is actually a very stupid one. After I uploaded everything, I created a wp-config.php file with my database information in it. And I got an error ‘No WPMU site defined on this host’. I google’d a lot and found that I actually should not create this file. The installation process would create the necessary files automatically.

Surely will have more fun when I play around with it even more.
